And in a cold garage in winter, many units simply stop running — because they sense the surrounding temperature and decide they don't need to. Check whether your model is rated for the location, because no repair fixes a correctly working appliance in the wrong environment.
Past about a quarter of an inch it insulates the walls, so the unit runs longer to hold temperature — and that produces more frost. A loop that accelerates itself, and free to break.
It blocks internal airflow in frost-free uprights, and stops chest freezer lids seating properly — which brings you back to the seal problem.
